I want to talk about the old faithful Baltic amber teething necklace. Almost every baby or child I come across has one around its neck or even as a bracelet or anklet. Olivia has had one since she was about a month old and I love to give them to friends as baby shower gifts.
But... how do they work? Lets look at what Amber is.
Amber is technically not a crystal. It doesn't actually have a crystalline structure because it's a resin. Amber is resin from pine trees in Columbia. To be considered true Amber it must completely fossilise over a process of 100,000 years! Since most of the Amber on the market today is less than 1,000 years old (and hasn't fossilised), it's actually Copal. So that's more than likely what we are putting around our babies necks. Don't worry - copal will eventually become Amber as it ages and has a similar vibration and effect so it's definitely still worthwhile using.
The idea is, Amber contains succinic acid, which is a natural analgesic and healing agent. As it warms against your body, the succinic acid will be absorbed through your skin helping with pain relief of teething, arthritis and more. It was used by Native Americans and Eastern Indians on their breastplates, and was considered a very grounding stone that was capable of healing powerfully yet gently, and was able to draw out negative energy of all kinds. Of course this also meant negative physical energy, such as teething pain. It also aids in emotional healing and depression and is a popular stone for adults too.
One of the most unique things about Amber is it doesn't need to be cleansed, energetically speaking. But it's still a great idea to charge your Amber necklaces. Amber, being a golden crystal, works with the energy of the sun. I've heard that to get the most of your Amber you should put it in the sun so that it's analgesic affect is more potent... but research has shown that the highest levels of succinic acid is in the cortex, which is the outer layer of the "crystal". So it wouldn't really bring more to the surface than whats already there.
But it is still useful to put your Amber in the sun for an energetic cleanse. The sun is a potent and common way to charge many crystals and it's really simple to do:
- Give your crystal a wash. Use tap water, or natural source water, such as a river or rainwater. Wash away any physical build up, and also energetically wash away any negative energy that it has accumulated. Visualisations and affirmations are very powerful during this process
- Place it in the sun, somewhere safe. Let the necklace soak up the rays for a few hours, and of course it will also dry. Let the sun do it's thing... go make yourself a cup of tea and collect it at sundown
- Place it back on your bub and give thanks to the power of the earth and sun
I've heard people say they noticed their babies' necklace was physically heavy after a teething episode or a prolonged time of wear. Other people have said the beads get cloudy. These are all good signs that it's time to wash and charge the necklace.
If your little one is old enough, get them involved. Take a bowl of salt water outside get them to give their necklace a wash and enjoy the process.
If you have friends and family who use Amber teething necklaces, share this post with them to help them get the most out of their beads.
